Next Meeting: Tuesday, June 13, 2023
The Montgomery County Coin Club will meet Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at 7 p.m. at the Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center, 1000 Forest Glen Road, Silver Spring.

The program will be a presentation by Jack Schadegg titled The Pleasures and Pitfalls of Coin Roll Searching.

May Program – 1893 World’s Fair

Jack Schadegg gave a presentation on the 1893 Columbian Exposition World’s Fair in Chicago. The fair was constructed on the shore of Lake Michigan and celebrated the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ voyage. 3 Commemorative coins were issued for the fair, as were over 80 medals, many of which are known as “so-called dollars.” The Fair is where Aunt Jemima, cracker jacks, hamburgers, and elongated cents were introduced for the first time. Also exhibited was the first ferris wheel, which was exceptionally large.

Ken Swab performed the auctioneering duties.

Thanks to Mary Robertson for providing a delicious and abundant selection of refreshments.

The raffle prize was a silver Franklin Mint dedication medal. The door prizes were a Zoroastrian new year silver medal, a 1962 Panama silver 1/10 balboa, and an uncirculated 1974 British Virgin Islands 10 cent piece.

May Member Displays

Jerry Grzenda showed several Coronation proof sets: The Coronation set for Edward VII in matte proof, the 1911 coronation set for George V, (both of these first two are “long sets” with the larger gold pieces), and lastly a 1937 George VI set.

Simcha Kuritzky showed Israel banknotes from the 60s along with notes from Tel Aviv. One featured a toy hammer, which Simcha brought an example of as well. These hammers are used to keep the beat in traditional songs.

Ken Swab showed a challenge coin from the American Battlefield Trust.

Mike Milo showed a 100 degree rotated 1989 Kennedy Half Dollar.

United States Mint Coins
Treasurer Simcha Kuritzky will have the 2023-P Eleanor Roosevelt quarters, but is still working to acquire the Ds. He will also have bicentennial Ike dollars available for face value, as well as a variety of other United States Mint coins for sale, including the Ohio P and D Innovation dollars (emblematic of the Underground Railroad), the 2023 P and D Native American Dollars featuring the ballerina Maria Tallchief, 2023 American Women quarters through Bessie Colman for face value, 2018-22 halves for 80 cents each or $15/roll, and Innovation dollars for $1.25 each or $30/roll.

Library Book Sale
MCCC continues to sell its library books and a selection of those books will be available at the May meeting, giving club members first chance to buy them at discounted prices before they are offered to the public on-online. You can view the entire library holdings here, and if you see any you are interested in, send an email to the club at mocoinclub@gmail.com.

Auction Results Available On-Line
The results for 2022 and 2023 MCCC auctions are available on the club’s website. The databases are fully searchable.

In addition to auction results, the website has the rules for submitting items for inclusion in the club’s monthly auctions.

Trivia
In 1916, new designs were released for the Dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar. Which of these new designs lasted the longest? (The answer will be revealed at the June meeting.)

The trivia question for May was: Who appears on the 500 dollar bill? (Answer: William McKinley)
