The Montgomery County Coin Club will meet Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at 7:15 p.m. at the  Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center, 1000 Forest Glen Road, Silver Spring. Meetings are open to members and non-members alike.

Michael Brandt will give a presentation on the Nuestra Señora de Atocha, a ship that sank in a hurricane in 1622 and was for a time the richest shipwreck ever discovered. He will discuss the history leading up to the wreck, the salvage of the wreck, the market for Atocha shipwreck coins and
some recent analyses that call into question many recent Atocha attributions. The photo below, courtesy of Heritage Auctions, shows a Bolivia: Philip III “Atocha” Cob 8 Reales ND (1618-1621), sold by Heritage on May 12, 2025 for: $7,200, including buyer’s premium.

In addition to the program, there will be a monthly auction consisting of a mix of U.S. and foreign coins, as well as other interesting numismatic items. Anyone in attendance may bid on the lots. Members will receive the auction list with their monthly bulletin. Non-members may bid on lots, but only members may submit items for auction. Searchable results for auctions from 2022 to the present are available on the website under the “Auctions” tab.

As always, snacks will be available.
