Next Meeting: Tuesday, May 9, 2023
The Montgomery County Coin Club will meet Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at 7 p.m. at the Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center, 1000 Forest Glen Road, Silver Spring.

The program will be a presentation by Jack Schadegg titled Commentary and Insights on the the Coins and Exonumia of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.

April Program – Amazing Women on American Coins

Tony Bonaro, the treasurer of Florida United Numismatists (FUN),gave a presentation via Zoom on women featured on U.S. coins throughout American history. The first “woman” to appear on our coins was Lady Liberty in 1793. Subsequent examples include Dolly Madison, Virginia Dare, Susan B Anthony, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, and Sacagawea. More recently, all of the first spouses have been featured on gold coins. And we are currently in the midst of the American Women Quarters program, featuring five women per year from 2022-2025. Tony was introduced by Ken Swab, who met Tony at the Ancient City Coin Club in St Augustine, FL.

Jack Schadegg performed the auctioneering duties.

Thanks to Mary Robertson for providing a delicious and abundant selection of refreshments.

The raffle prize was a 1973 Virgin Islands Silver Proof Coin. The door prizes were a 1966 Guernsey 10 shillings coin, a South Africa 50 cents piece, and a Japanese 100 Yen coin.

April Member Displays

Jerry Grzenda showed several world proof sets he had recently come across. These were a pre-decimal and a modern New Zealand proof set, an Australian set commemorating military personnel after WWII, and a 2006 Republic of Ireland Euro proof set.

Simcha Kuritzky followed up on his Felines coins exhibit from March, noting that felines on US coins include the Vermont Sesquicentennial commemorative half dollar, the 5 dollar gold Colombian commemorative – the Spanish coat of arms contains a lion, the Lions club silver dollar, and the San Antonio quarter (exhibit included the regular issue and the 5 ounce piece).

United States Mint Coins
Treasurer Simcha Kuritzky will have Ohio P and D Innovation dollars (emblematic of the Underground Railroad), the 2023 P and D Native American Dollars featuring the ballerina Maria Tallchief, as well as a variety of other United States Mint coins for sale, including 2022 American Women quarters through Bessie Colman for face value, 2018-22 halves for 80 cents each or $15/roll, and Innovation dollars for $1.25 each or $30/roll.

Library Book Sale
MCCC continues to sell its library books and a selection of those books will be available at the May meeting, giving club members first chance to buy them at discounted prices before they are offered to the public on-online. You can view the entire library holdings here, and if you see any you are interested in, send an email to the club at mocoinclub@gmail.com.

Auction Results Available On-Line (New!)
The results for 2022 and 2023 MCCC auctions are available on the club’s website. The databases are fully searchable. They should be a useful tool for members who are interesting in seeing what coins similar to those they might be interested in selling brought – or what they may expect to pay for a coin in a current auction. In general, the results are updated monthly, usually within a few days of the latest auction.

In addition to auction results, the website has the rules for submitting items for inclusion in the club’s monthly auctions.

Trivia (New!)

Who appears on the 500 dollar bill?
(The answer will be revealed at the May meeting.)
