March Program – Hamilton’s Bimetallic Standard
Alexander Hamilton proposed a bimetallic standard for the United States. He recognized stability of gold, but the US was flush with silver in 1791, and Hamilton wanted to exploit that. The coinage act of 1792 established a gold to silver ratio of 15:1. However, the global market ratio soon reached 15.5:1. The result was the outflow of US gold coins, and inflow of silver. In practical terms we were on the silver standard. Over the ensuing decades, the market ratio continued to fluctuate, sometimes favoring gold, and sometimes silver. The United States did not formally drop the bimetallic standard in favor of a sole gold standard until 1873
Ken Swab performed the auctioneering duties.
Thanks to Mary Robertson for providing a delicious and abundant selection of refreshments.
The raffle prize was a Halley’s Comet Silver round from the Franklin Mint. The door prizes were a 1938 Sweden silver 10 Ore, 1953 silver Sweden 25 Ore, and a US Mint Medal commemorating an 1836 First Steam Coinage Copper.
