The Montgomery County Coin Club will meet Tuesday, September 12, 2023, (tomorrow) at 7 p.m. at the Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center, 1000 Forest Glen Road, Silver Spring.
The September MCCC meeting will omit a traditional program in favor of an extended auction to clear a backlog of submitted items.
August Program – Extended Auction
Attendees of the ANA shared their thoughts on the show. The August meeting also featured an extended auction.
The door prizes were an 1899 5 Kopeks coin from Russia, and 1993 Guatemala 5 Centavos, and a 1938 Sweden silver 5 Ore. The raffle prize was Ellis Island commemorative silver dollar.Ken Swab performed the auctioneering duties.
Thanks to Mary Robertson for providing a delicious and abundant selection of refreshments.
August Member Displays
Jerry Grzenda showed three items he acquired at the ANA show in Pittsburgh: A Japanese gold 5 yen, a 6 Lire Italian States coin from the 1790s, and a gold badge. He also showed a “Bugs Bunny” variety Franklin Half Dollar in a PCGS slab.
Ken Swab showed a set of four Battle of Plattsburgh medals, featuring Major General Alexander Macomb, Lieutenant Stephen Cassin, Lieutenant Robert Henley, and Thomas MacDonough. Each medal was graded by NGC and encases in oversized slabs to accommadate the size of the medals. Ken exhibited this set at the ANA.
Simcha Kuritzky showed his medal of merit awarded to him at the ANA, a Burundi 50 Franc lion sculpture “coin,” a fantasy note depicting a tiger, and a high relief silver medal from the republic of Turin.
Steve Ferguson showed his 50 year ANA membership award – a lapel and gold pin.

Trivia
Aside from the infamous 1913, what is the key date Liberty Head or “V” Nickel? (The answer will be revealed at the meeting.)
The trivia question for August was: In 1982, the “transitional year” for Lincoln Cents, they were minted in both Philadelphia and Denver, with both copper and zinc compositions, and with small and large dates. Which of the 8 possible combinations is exceedingly rare, with only a few know examples? (Answer: Denver mint, copper planchet, small date.)
2023 Dues
Memberships expire at the end of the year. Dues for 2023 are still $8, the lowest coin club dues you will find virtually anywhere. Please pay your dues to our Treasurer, Simcha Kuritzky, either in person at a meeting, via check to MCCC, P.O. Box 13504, Silver Spring, MD 20911, or via PayPal (family and friends option, please) at montgomerycoin@gmail.com.
