Montgomery County Coin Club
January 2023 Bulletin

Next Meeting: Tuesday, January 10, 2023

The Montgomery County Coin Club will meet Tuesday, January 10, 2023, at 7 p.m. at the freshly painted Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center, 1000 Forest Glen Road, Silver Spring.

The program will be a presentation on the challenges and difficulties of the first U.S. Mint operating in Philadelphia between 1792 and 1816. Influences of equipment, coin demand, inflation, and War of 1812 will be discussed. In addition, to the program, the 2023 officers will be sworn in, there will be member exhibits, snacks and a 40-lot auction. The auction list is at the end of the bulletin.

December Donated Auction

The charity auction this year was for the Montgomery County Humane Society, in memory of Scott Barman. Scott was both an accomplished numismatist and an animal lover.  President Jack Schadegg gave a thoughtful tribute to Scott at the start of the auction.  The auction brought in $934.25, far exceeding the estimate of $698.  Another $100 was donated as well. Bidding was fast and furious.  Several lots were linked to some very enticing bonus prizes, including an 1878 Morgan dollar with eight tail feathers.

Chuck Hess and Ken Swab split the auctioneering duties given the large number of items.

Thanks to Mary Robertson for providing a delicious and abundant selection of refreshments

The raffle prize was large Bahamian $2 dollar coin.  Door prizes were two French coins and a Persian (Peruvian?) coin.

December Member Displays

Simcha Kuritzky had a large set of amulets portraying a pentagram with the Latinized word Tetragrammaton (the Four-Letter Name of God) surrounding the center devices.

Ken Swab showed a $20 bill with an overstamp warning against ‘money in politics’.

Mike Milo had a 1956 counterfeit quarter, metal unknown but not silver.

Gerry Grzenda showed a set of Greek medals issued by the Order of the Redeemer, which was created shortly after Greece won its independence from Turkey.  All medals featured an Orthodox-styled image of Jesus.

United States Mint Coins

Treasurer Simcha Kuritzky will have Tennessee P and D Innovation dollars (celebrating the Tennessee Valley Authority), as well as a variety of other United States Mint coins for sale, including 2022 American Women quarters through Anna May Wong for face value, 2018-22 halves for 80 cents each or $15/roll, and Innovation dollars including Kentucky Bluegrass for $1.25 each or $30/roll.
