Next Meeting: Tuesday, September 10, 2024
The Montgomery County Coin Club will meet Tuesday, September 10th, 2024, at 7 p.m. at the Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center, 1000 Forest Glen Road, Silver Spring.

The program will consist of a presentation from Simcha Kuritzky on the transition to American independence as shown by paper money of the period.
August Program – Member Reports from the ANA Show

For our August meeting, Simcha Kuritzky gave an engaging discussion on the recent ANA Convention, sharing highlights and experiences from the event.

The door prizes were a 1950 Sweden silver 25 ore, a proof South African 50 cents, and a 1951 Canada nickel commemorative in BU condition. The raffle prize was an RFK commemorative silver dollar.

August Member Displays

  • Michael Schwartz: Displayed a gold Fanam, weighing .0135 oz, issued by rulers in Ceylon and found in Travancore.
  • Simcha Kuritzky: Shared a commemorative coin from Ascension Island, produced for the ANA convention. This silver-plated coin had a limited mintage of 1,000 and was signed by Tom Yuram. He also displayed a colorized Canadian Mint coin depicting a puma gazing at its reflection, along with his award-winning exhibits: A Heh amulet, Vermont’s catamount, a Zionist so-called dollar, and a collection titled Israel and Currency: Idolatrous Money.
  • Steve Ferguson: Presented a bronze plaque from Alsace featuring an image of a theater in Strasbourg on the reverse.
  • Andrew Luck: Displayed a collection of Gold Liberty Half Eagles from all seven issuing mints.

Thanks to Mary Robertson for providing a delicious and abundant selection of refreshments.

Ken Swab performed auctioneering duties.

Trivia
Which state quarter depicted the same thing that a classic commemorative half dollar depicted for the same state? (The answer will be revealed at the meeting.)
The August trivia question was: If you find a nickel dated 1944 without the iconic large mint mark above Monticello, what do you most likely have? Answer: A Henning nickel, a famous counterfeit.
