Next Meeting: Tuesday, August 13, 2024
The Montgomery County Coin Club will meet Tuesday, August 13th, 2024 (tomorrow), at 7 p.m. at the Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center, 1000 Forest Glen Road, Silver Spring.

The program will consist of reports from MCCC members attending the American Numismatic Association‘s World’s Fair of Money being held in Chicago (Rosemont) August 6-10.
July Program – Money Day

For our July meeting, MCCC President Jack Schadegg gave a brief photo-augmented talk and commentary on the Gaithersburg Community Museum’s “Money Day.” The museum held Money Day on Saturday, April 27, in conjunction with the public reveal and display of their recently acquired 1902 $10 National banknote of the First National Bank of Gaithersburg. An MCCC contribution to the museum assisted in the acquisition. MCCC was on-hand on Money Day with a 3-table display of numismatic collectibles and hobby information.

The door prizes were a Sweden silver 25 ore, a 1987 bronze 10 francs coin, and a silver Canada dime. The raffle prize was a 1987 anniversary of the Constitution silver commemorative dollar.

July Member Displays

Simcha Kuritzky showed official copies of banknotes, including a bronze banknote sculpture with the actual corresponding banknote for comparison purposes. He also showed two ancient Roman coins depicting felins purchased at Baltimore: One with Athena riding a lion, and the other showing Dionesus reclining on a panther. Both were in excellent condition.

Steve Ferguson showed a Swiss 600th anniversary medal, and a 60th anniversary queen Victoria medal – the reverse of which features shields with the names of all the British countries.

Jerry Grzenda showed several Olympic medals, from the 1920 Belgium games, the 1924 Paris games, and the 1988 Seoul games. Additionally, he showed a officiant’s cummerbund from the 1904 games.

Thanks to Mary Robertson for providing a delicious and abundant selection of refreshments.

Ken Swab performed auctioneering duties.
