Next Meeting: Tuesday, May 14, 2024
The Montgomery County Coin Club will meet Tuesday, May 14th, 2024, at 7 p.m. at the Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center, 1000 Forest Glen Road, Silver Spring.

The MCCC May program will be a presentation on Patsy Takemoto Mink, who is honored on the 12th coin in the American Women Quarter Program. Mrs. Mink, as a U.S. Representative from Hawai’i, fought for gender and racial equality, affordable childcare, and environmental protection. She is best known for championing Title IX, legislation which opened new opportunities to women in education and school sports. The presentation will be by Kenneth Swab, who served as Legislative Director to Rep. Mink from 2000-01.

Additionally, The Gaithersburg, MD Community Museum held “Money Day” on Saturday 27 April in conjunction with the public reveal and display of their recently acquired scarce 1902 $10 National banknote of the historic Gaithersburg 1st National Bank (charter #4608). Along with a Maryland State Numismatic Association display of early Maryland colonial and post-Independence currency notes and scrip, MCCC was on-hand with a 3-table display of numismatic collectibles and hobby info. MCCC President Jack Schadegg will give brief a photo-augmented talk and commentary on the day’s activities and public outreach engagements.

April Program – American coin and currency counterfeiters

For our April meeting, we were presented with a PowerPoint presentation titled, “A snapshot of lesser American coin and currency counterfeiters – their rise and fall.” This 20-minute presentation featured, not the most famous nor largest U.S. counterfeiting operations, but those lesser operations that have the most interesting stories, characters, or products.

Thanks to Mary Robertson for providing a delicious and abundant selection of refreshments.
