Next Meeting: Tuesday, April 9, 2024

The Montgomery County Coin Club will meet Tuesday, April 9th, 2024, at 7 p.m. at the Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center, 1000 Forest Glen Road, Silver Spring.The MCCC April program will consist of a Powerpoint presentation titled “A snapshot of lesser American coin and currency counterfeiters – their rise and fall.” This presentation features, not the most famous nor largest US operations, but those lesser operations that have the most interesting stories, characters, or products. 

March Program – Trivia Game

For our March meeting president Jack Schadegg led the group in a trivia game focused on US 20th century minor coinage.

The door prizes were 1927 silver Sweden 25 Ore, a Delaware silver fantasy quarter, and a 1956 Switzerland silver 1 franc. The raffle prize was a Bicentennial of Congress Commemorative silver dollar.  Chuck Hess performed the auctioneering duties. 

Thanks to Mary Robertson for providing a delicious and abundant selection of refreshments.  

March Member Displays

Simcha Kuritzky displayed a Jerusalem Holy Land Mint silver round commemorating Isreal’s 75th anniversary, as well as a Franklin Mint silver medal depicting the 1979 signing of the Egyptian/Israeli Peace Treaty.  Jerry Grzenda displayed a wide-ranging collection of 17-19th century Irish coins.

United States Mint Coins

Treasurer Simcha Kuritzky will have the 2024 Rev. Pauli Murray quarters, the Native American centennial of citizenship dollars, and the Illinois Innovation steel plow dollars, both P and D. He will also have a variety of other United States Mint coins for sale, including the 2023 P and D Native American Dollars featuring the ballerina Maria Tallchief, 2023 American Women quarters through Eleanor Roosevelt for face value, 2018-22 halves for 80 cents each or $15/roll, and Innovation dollars for $1.25 each or $30/roll.

Library Book Sale

MCCC continues to sell its library books, giving club members first chance to buy them at discounted prices before they are offered to the public online. You can view the entire library holdings here, and if you see any you are interested in, send an email to the club at mocoinclub@gmail.com.

Auction Results Available On-Line

The results for 2022 and 2023 MCCC auctions are available on the club’s website. The databases are fully searchable.In addition to auction results, the website has the rules for submitting items for inclusion in the club’s monthly auctions.

Trivia

What was the highest denomination coin produced by the US mint in the 18th century? (The answer will be revealed at the meeting.)The March trivia question was what battleship is on the reverse of the 1918 $2 Federal Reserve note? Answer: The USS New York. 

2024 Dues

Memberships expire at the end of the year.  Dues for 2024 are still $8, the lowest coin club dues you will find virtually anywhere.
