Montgomery County Coin Club
October 2024 Bulletin

Next Meeting: Tuesday, October 8, 2024
The Montgomery County Coin Club will meet Tuesday, October 8th, 2024 (tomorrow), at 7 p.m. at the Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center, 1000 Forest Glen Road, Silver Spring.

The program will consist of a presentation by Jack Schadegg on the Kennedy Half Dollar.
Background: Intended primarily as a memorial to assassinated president John F. Kennedy, the Kennedy half dollar was authorized by Congress just over a month after his death. In late December 1963, Mint Director Eva Adams, after discussions with Mint sculptors Gilroy Roberts and Frank Gasparro on designing and producing obverse and reverse dies, obtained design approval from Jacqueline Kennedy. Striking of silver half dollar coins began on the 2nd of January 1964. The reverse of the new half dollar, designed by Frank Gasparro, was a rendering of the Presidential Seal of the United States – which has a genesis in and of the Great Seal of the United States. This program/Power Point briefly reviews the history, purpose, renditions, and changes to the Great Seal of the United States.
